The perfect game collection for your steam video game console

The perfect game collection for your steam video game console

A Steam based custom video game console

Important: Everything here is my honest opinion. To fund this blog I include links to the mentioned games in the Humble Store. Feel free to use them, this will earn me a few cents. But this sponsoring will not in any way bias my articles.

So why, would you ask, should I build a video game console myself and not just use a Nintendo Switch, XBOX One or PS4? I have a list for you with pros and cons. Decide for yourself, but let’s spoiler you a little bit: the main point is prices.

Pro

  • up to 95% lower game prices on the PC (for example in the Humble Store)
  • the same hardware for years
    • no need to buy a new console every few years
    • keep your gamepads
    • no need to buy games again to play them on the new console
  • play with emulators like Dolphin or RetroArch

Contra

  • newer games want newer hardware
    • buy new processor and graphics card every few years
    • bigger hard disc drives
  • you will need mouse and keyboard from time to time
    • Steam has not managed to make using a PC with a gamepad hassle free
    • Windows can not be used with a gamepad only
  • drivers can be really nasty
  • much less great multiplayer games

In short: playing on the PC is much cheaper, but not as painless as the console.

Great games to make console players feel at home

Want that gaming console feeling for your steam mashine? I’ve got a list for you. With these titles your living room Steam PC will feel more like a Nintendo gaming console.

All games are gamepad compatible.

Miss those days, when you sat down on a couch with your friends and played together? You don’t like playing with keyboard and mouse? I myself have always been a big fan of the classical gaming console experience. Start the console and play - no fiddling with drivers, graphics settings or save game directories. Well, Steam is not perfect, but as good as it gets, when you try to have this on a PC.
I was looking for years for good multiplayer games or platformers, which give me that Nintendo feeling. Here is what I found. If you are a child of the 90’s, chances are you will like them as much as I do. Have fun :)
This blog has an affiliate program with Humble Bundle. The games’ links direct to Humble Store, where you can buy them at fair prices. If you decide to do so, you support me as well.

Fun Racer

Games like Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing

Team Sonic Racing

SEGA’s newest family member in the fun racer section. Unfortunately transformations are gone, but playing with your friends is even more fun as you really play together now.

Team Sonic Racing (Humble Store)

Sonic & All Stars Racing - Transformed

If you’re looking for something like Mario Kart for Steam, there is only one game that is worth to be called in one sentence with it: SEGA’s second racing game. The first one is good as well, but “Transformed” is a real jewel for your games collection.
Somewhere between Mario Kart 8 and Diddy Kong Racing, this game does everything right. In addition to classic game modes like Grand Prix and Quick Race it offers online play with lots of active players, Splitscreen for up to 4 local players and a huge campain mode with lots of different tasks, like Drifting, Overtaking, Goal hitting and so on. In short:

Features:

  • 4 player splitscreen
  • online play
  • huge campain mode
  • 3 different vehicle types
  • loads of well known SEGA characters
  • many great transforming racing tracks

You really shouldn’t miss that one. Have fun :)

Beach Buggy Racing

Beach Buggy Racing is a game that has been a big surprise to me. I’ve never heard of the Studio (Vectorunit) before and therefore did not expect too much. But this game definitely did not get enough attention! It’s one of the best Fun Racers out there and it does not have to hide from the big ones, like Mario Kart or Sonic Racing. The tracks, cars and characters are designed with much love. Items work like you would expect it. On big issue: it’s not available on Steam, but on Microsoft Store.

Features:

  • available for PC and Android
  • Gamepad support even on Android
  • lots of beautiful tracks
  • different game modes
  • car upgrading system
  • rating system for races
  • lots of stuff to unlock
  • free to play with ads or one time purchase (fair model - pay once and never again)

Couch Coop / Local Multiplayer

Several fun multiplayer games for you.

Rayman Legends

Looking for anything like New Super Mario Bros. for your PC? Ubisoft got you covered. Rayman Legends is one of the greatest and funniest multiplayer Jump ‘n’ Runs ever made. It is beautiful and you will not rest until the last level is completed. Even with four players there is no frustration about standing in each other’s way. You will never forget the music levels. I promise. Simply great.

[Unreal Engine][C++] How to create a simple trigger actor

[Unreal Engine][C++] How to create a simple trigger actor A Simple Trigger Volume in C++ Used Unreal Engine Version: 4.22 This is the first post of a small series of Unreal Engine C++ Tutorials. Keep in mind, that Unreal’s API changes rapidly and often. I still hope, this may be of some use to others. Coming from Unity, programming in C++ for Unreal is rather painful. I hope to give you some assistance and make life a little bit easier. Whay, would you say, should we make our own trigger actor? There is ATriggerVolume , right? Yes, there is, but inheriting from it is difficult and rather undocumented. I tried and failed. Yes, we have to give up some of ATriggerVolume 's functionality, but we learn a lot and at least we know exactly what it’s doing. First, we’ll create a new C++ class, inheriting from Actor , called SimpleTriggerVolume . Let’s add a protected property to hold a reference to our trigger component: /** Shape of the trigger volume componen
